I had the pleasure of hanging out with my 11-year old niece Miriah all day last Friday. I had a wonderfully fun day planned. We would watch movies. We would go to Downtown Bellingham and walk around to the different stores and have lunch. We'd go to her house and feed Jasper and the puppy Bella. We'd go in our pool for some fun. And we'd have pizza to finish off our day.
We did all of those things. But it went a little differently.
We went downtown and paid the parking meter for two hours. We decided we'd walk around for a little bit than go eat some lunch. Shortly after we started walking Miriah says to me "I don't know if I should be a Democrat or a Republican". She's 11. I tell her that. I also tell her that she doesn't need to decide that for a long time. Our day was filled with political talk. I don't like to talk much about politics with people because it is such a heated subject. I never in my wildest dreams thought I would be having this conversation with an 11-year old.
"John McCain just looks like a President" she said a few weeks ago. And one of her biggest concerns is abortion. (She's 11). John McCain is against abortion. Obama is for the woman's right to choose. All I could tell her is that there are a lot of other more important issues to think about. Ones that have a bigger impact on we American's as a whole nation.
"Should I be a donkey or an elephant"? I tell her she should be a kid.
It is very strange having political conversations with an 11-year old. Future debater? Future politician? Future Presidential candidate?
Later on in the pool we somehow got onto the discussion of what high school she was going to go to. I didn't get a choice of which one I went to. But this discussion is for another day.
I just want to see her get through middle school first.
Miriah, I love you. Be a kid. Talk about Hanna Montana and waterslides. Talk about giggling with your friends when a boy they like walks by. Talk about wanting your ears pierced, or the Jonas Brothers, or what cool things Jasper and Bella can do. Be a kid.

This made me sad. Eleven year-olds shouldn't be thinking about such things. Back in my day (affect pompous old person voice) I didn't know a darn thing about anything political. Did you know what was going on politically in 1982?
However, if you do feel like making sure she goes to the good side I can help sway her with victory donkeys. I don't make victory elephants.
Hahaa. I had the same conversation with Miriah!! She was asking Mike and I how much homework she will get if she is a science major in college. She also told us which colleges are on her list. We both told her she shouldn't worry about that just yet!!!
Well, I think there is so much to think about. Which college? Which high school? Where do I want to live? How do I want to raise my kids? What kind of dessert can I make? What new tricks can I teach Bella and Jasper? What movie can I check out from Aunt Val's library?
High school is not that far away. Four more years from that I'll be in college. Then two years after college I'll be getting married and having kids. And then I'll be thinking who do I really need for President.
Don't worry. I am a kid!
