Stinky spray

Have any of you ever used deer repellent? I decided to use some since they have been eating my tulips. I like the deer in the yard, but if they would only stop eating my favorite flower of all time.
I used the spray kind. They make a granule kind of repellent. Maybe next time I'll try that because the spray stuff smells horrible! It smells like something died and got liquefied.
Needless to say, it works. They deer have not eaten any more tulips.

You are probably close to right on identifying the smell. I believe that many deer repellants include one or both of the compounds putrescene and cadaverine (real things, look them up). These are the compounds that are responsible for the smells associated with decaying flesh. In case you were concerned, these compounds are synthesized, not taken from actual... um... samples.

Why do I know this? I have no idea. But I blame my high school chemistry teacher, Mr. Larson.

Thanks for the input. I think you're right.
I blame my high school teachers for a lot of things, too.
