I went fishing on Sunday for the first time this year . . . actually, it's the first time since September!!!!!
My brother, Jeff, and his wife, Sarah, invited me out on free-fishing weekend (since I haven't gotten my license yet).
We went trout fishing on Lake McMurray in Conway. I'd never been there so it was really exciting to see a new body of water.
I got to their house at 6:30 in the morning and we were in the water by 7:00 a.m. No one got a bite until around 8:30. Sarah pulled in the first fish. And the second. And the third. Jeff caught his tiny little fish around 9:30 (we contemplated putting it back but he was hooked in the eye so Jeff decided to keep it since it wouldn't make it anyway). My first fish didn't come until around 10 o'clock. And my second fish was landed within 10 minutes of the first one!
All in all, we pulled in 8 fish between us (Sarah being the fishing queen of the day by catching her limit of 5). I did hook another one but made the mistake of not paying attention to where the fish was and pulled it out of the water before the net was anywhere near it (the one that got away, of course).
We trolled for them, which I had never done before with trout, so it was neat to learn something new and to use gear I had never tried. The gross part, however, was when the worms would "poop" on me . . . but I guess I would crap myself, too, if someone was trying to stick a hook into me. I haven't fished with worms since I was 12, so I think I should be cut a little slack.
Jeff and Sarah sent me home with four of the trout, and I grilled them up on the BBQ. I put different seasonings on each of the fish to see which one tasted the best (one had Johnny's Seasoned salt and garlic powder; one had Southwest Seasoning; one had Cajun Seasoning; and one had a combination of all three). The best? Southwest Seasoning.
(NOTE: All of the trout were around 13-14 inches . . . except Jeff's. His little "herring" was barely 9 inches. Still a good size for a trout, but kind of funny since all the others were pretty big.)
