Slugs, snails and beer . . . OH MY!

I hate slugs.
I hate snails.
I love beer.
What do the three have in common? Slugs and snails love beer, too. We have a mass amount (of all three) at our house. There are some neighbors across the street who have lived here for years and didn't know snails were around here.
Well, WE have lots of snails.
And I have decided to offer them beer.
For those of you who don't know, for some reason beer attracts slugs and snails. So I have meticulously placed plastic bottles half full of beer around the back yard at night. They crawl inside, drop in the tasty liquid, and drown. Mean? Un-humane? Yep.
It works.
I had a trail of about eight snails leading to a bottle at 5:30 A.M. this morning. I have never seen such a straight line, not even during a fourth grade fire drill. So I plucked each one up, dropped it in the bottle, capped it and tossed it in the garbage.
I was late for work. Is collecting slugs a legitimate excuse?

I think that is a perfectly reasonable excuse to be late to work. Ummm...you aren't going to make it "Escargot-Fest 2008" this weekend are you? :-{

I've heard it's easier for them to crawl into pie pans full of beer. That way at least they get to drink up before they drown. : )

Yes, but the problem with that is I have a dog who also likes beer.
